How conversion works

This tool uses two open-source libraries — Mammoth.js to read the structure of your .docx file, and html2pdf to render the result into a PDF. Everything runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. Headings, paragraphs, lists, basic tables, bold and italic text, and inline images all carry over reliably.

Some formatting can't be perfectly preserved without server-side software like Microsoft Word or LibreOffice — exact fonts, custom page breaks, headers and footers, and complex multi-column layouts may shift slightly. For most CVs, letters, articles, and reports the result is indistinguishable from the original.

How to convert

  1. Drop your .docx file into the upload box.
  2. Pick the page size and margin you want.
  3. Click Convert to PDF and download the result.

How Word-to-PDF conversion works

This tool reads your Word (.docx) file using the Mammoth.js library, extracts the content with formatting preserved (paragraphs, headings, lists, basic styling), and renders it as a PDF using html2pdf. All conversion happens in your browser — no upload to a server. Files in older .doc format must be saved as .docx first using any modern word processor.

When to convert Word to PDF

What is preserved during conversion

Paragraph text, bold and italic formatting, headings, bullet and numbered lists, basic table structure, and embedded images are preserved. Page breaks are inserted automatically based on content length. What may not be preserved exactly: complex tables with merged cells, custom fonts not embedded in the document, page headers and footers (depending on docx structure), track-changes annotations, and form fields. For maximum fidelity in professional output, use Microsoft Word's built-in "Save as PDF" — it produces a more accurate result than any third-party tool.

Disclaimer

For legal, contractual, or other documents where exact visual fidelity matters, use Microsoft Word or Google Docs' built-in PDF export. This tool is best for casual conversions where general structure preservation is sufficient. Always preview the output before sharing or submitting.

FAQ

Why .docx only? What about .doc?

The older .doc format is a binary file from before 2007 and isn't readable in browsers. Open the file in Word or Google Docs and "Save as .docx" first.

Will my fonts be preserved?

System default fonts (Times, Arial, Calibri-equivalents) carry over. Custom fonts may be substituted if your browser doesn't have them.

Is my document private?

Yes. Conversion happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to any server.

Frequently asked questions

What Word formats are supported?

.docx (Word 2007 and later) is fully supported. Older .doc format must be saved as .docx first using any modern word processor (Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, Google Docs).

Will my custom fonts be preserved?

Standard fonts (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Courier) yes. Custom fonts not embedded in the document will be substituted with system defaults — the result may look different from your Word view. For perfect font fidelity, use Microsoft Word's built-in "Save as PDF".

Are page headers and footers preserved?

Sometimes. Headers and footers in standard docx structures are preserved; complex section-specific headers may not be.

What about track changes and comments?

Track changes are stripped during conversion (the final accepted text is used). Comments are also dropped. Accept all changes in Word before converting.
