How to use this tool
- Choose your portal — NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL, depending on where you're applying.
- Drop or paste a recent passport-style photograph into the box above.
- Pick the target file size — 30 KB works for both portals.
- Click Resize photo and download the result, ready to upload.
PAN card photo specifications
The two PAN-issuing agencies in India have slightly different photo requirements:
- NSDL / Protean eGov: 213 × 213 pixels (equivalent to 3.5 × 2.5 cm), JPEG format, file size between 20 KB and 50 KB.
- UTIITSL: 300 × 300 pixels, JPEG format, file size typically under 30 KB.
Both portals require a recent colour photograph with a plain light-coloured background, the full face clearly visible facing the camera, and no caps, sunglasses, or heavy shadows. This tool crops your image to the correct square dimensions for your chosen portal and compresses it to your target file size automatically.
Worked example
Suppose you have a 4 MB selfie from your phone and you're applying for a PAN card through NSDL. Select the NSDL preset (213 × 213 px), choose a 30 KB target, and upload. The tool centre-crops your photo to a square, scales it to 213 × 213 pixels, and compresses it to about 28–30 KB. The result downloads as a JPEG that NSDL's upload form will accept on the first try — no "file too large" or "wrong dimensions" rejection.
How to take a good PAN photo
A smartphone camera is perfectly adequate. Stand about a metre from a plain light-coloured wall in even, soft daylight — facing a window works well. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, both eyes open, the full face visible from hairline to chin. Avoid harsh overhead light that casts shadows. Don't wear sunglasses or anything that covers your face. Once captured, upload it here and let the tool handle the cropping and compression.
Common PAN photo rejection reasons
- Wrong dimensions. The portals check pixel dimensions strictly — a photo that isn't the exact required size is rejected. This tool produces the precise pixel size for each portal.
- File too large. NSDL caps at 50 KB, UTI around 30 KB. Phone photos are typically 2–5 MB, far too large until compressed.
- Background too dark or busy. Use a plain, light background.
- Face not centred or too small. The full face should fill most of the frame.
- Wrong format. Both portals require JPEG; this tool always outputs JPEG.
Why this tool runs in your browser
A PAN application photo is identity data tied to your tax records. Uploading it to a random "free photo resizer" website means handing your face image to whoever runs that site, with no guarantee it isn't stored. This tool processes everything inside your browser using the Canvas API. The image never leaves your device — you can verify by disconnecting from the internet after the page loads and resizing offline, which still works.
Applying for a PAN also needs a signature image. Use our Signature Resizer with the NSDL (354×157 px) or UTI (400×200 px) preset. Already have an Aadhaar to resize? Try the Aadhaar Photo Resizer.
Disclaimer
PAN photo specifications can change without notice. Always cross-check the current requirements on the official NSDL (tin-nsdl.com / protean-tinpan.com) or UTIITSL (utiitsl.com) portal before submitting your application. This tool implements the most commonly accepted specifications as of May 2026 but is not affiliated with NSDL, UTIITSL, or the Income Tax Department.
Frequently asked questions
Which preset should I use — NSDL or UTI?
Use whichever portal you're applying through. If you applied via Protean/NSDL (the tin-nsdl or protean-tinpan website), use NSDL. If via UTIITSL, use UTI. The dimensions differ, so picking the right one matters.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The entire resize and compression happens in your browser using the Canvas API. Nothing leaves your device — important for identity documents like a PAN photo.
What if my photo is sideways?
Modern phones tag photos with EXIF orientation, which this tool respects automatically. Your photo will appear right-side up.
Can I also resize my signature for PAN?
Yes. Use our Signature Resizer — it has NSDL (354×157 px) and UTI (400×200 px) presets for PAN signature uploads.
